QLED and OLED are two display technologies that offer distinct advantages and disadvantages.
The terms QLED and OLED refer to two very different display technologies. Both technologies are closely related to one manufacturer each. For a long time, OLED screens for televisions were produced exclusively by LG, but other manufacturers now also offer OLED televisions, such as Sony, Loewe or Philips. You can find QLED screens on Samsung, Hisense or Tcl.
What is the difference between QLED and OLED?
The difference between QLED and OLED is purely technological. Simple explanation: With OLED, the iodine turns on by itself. With QLED televisions, the LED backlight lets the pixels shine. QLED is an improvement over the familiar LCD technology, while OLED is an independent technology. In comparison, OLED televisions are thinner and more contrasting.
QLED televisions have several layers on top of each other. These layers include polarizing filters, RGB filters, background filters and of course background lighting. It makes TVs thicker than OLED devices that don’t need this coating. The disadvantage of many QLED televisions compared to OLED is that the contrast is slightly lower. The reason is the backlight of the QLED television, which also illuminates the dark areas of the screen and “greys out” the black parts. Top models like the Samsung Q95T offer a dimming zone, i.e. the area on the screen that is illuminated by the television is brighter or darker and thus problems can be controlled.
On Samsung TVs, you can identify inches with an identifier after “GQ”. 65 stands for 65 inches on the Samsung GQ-65Q950T. It is one of the manufacturer’s top models at the moment and has a resolution of 8K. It’s still huge and you’ll be able to enjoy watching 4K television for years to come.
OLED screens do not require a dimming zone. Each light diode can decide for itself whether and how strongly it glows. OLED televisions get better contrast and deeper blacks than QLED televisions. If the Iode doesn’t light up, it’s just black – but the one next to it doesn’t matter glowing bright white. In addition, OLED screens have better viewing angles than QLED TVs. If you look sideways at the screen, you’ll see colors better with OLED. But televisions have one drawback: they are usually too dark to display a bright image like snow-white mountain peaks.
What are QLEDs?
Let’s take a closer look at QLED technology. This has to be the best that an LED screen has to offer, as it is considered an “LCD television” with very high color and contrast. This is a further development of the LCD display with the so-called “Quantum Dots”, which was given the name Q. LCD stands for “Liquid Crystal Display”: The alignment of the crystals changes via electrical impulses and the amount of light they emit can vary.
Different colors are created this way because the crystals don’t shine on their own, so a background light is needed. The light is produced by LEDs, which gave the name LCD TV LED TV. Further developments to QLED televisions mainly affect the backlight, as with QLED televisions, another layer, the quantum dots, is placed on top of the already existing LED filter. They made sure that the television could display a brighter and more colorful picture.
- Brightness: Thanks to Quantum Dots, QLED images can be brighter than LED screens.
- Contrast: It also increases contrast as the diode does not lose its color even with higher brightness.
- Energy consumption: Since the backlight is permanently on, the energy consumption of QLED screens can be higher than OLED.

Now there are several manufacturers of QLED TVs, but Samsung is very well known and popular. The manufacturer advertises that QLED devices from Samsung can upscale images to an impressive 8K with impressive computing power and artificial intelligence. However, 8K-capable televisions are expensive to buy. If you’re looking for a good entry-level QLED television, you should get the Samsung Q60R. TVs that have QLED technology and should also assure gamers with very short latency periods. Ambient mode should adapt the TV to its surroundings. The Quantum 4K processor is said to continuously optimize images and sound with the help of artificial intelligence. In addition, the smart TV can be controlled via voice commands, compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant.
What is OLED?
The most important difference between QLED and OLED televisions is that OLED works without a backlight, as the pixels themselves are lit. They are made up of millions of tiny light-emitting diodes made of organic material – this explains the “O” in the name, it stands for the English word “organic”. Organic light-emitting diodes are luminous thin-film components made of organic semiconductor materials. This technology is used in TV screens because organic light-emitting diodes can be produced cheaply using thin-film technology. Unlike the QLED screen, the black color should be very intense because it is not illuminated by the backlight. Colors should also appear more intense against a solid black background.
- Contrast: An OLED display should provide a high-contrast image, created by rich black tones. This is due to the self-igniting OLED and missing backlight.
- Response time: OLED TVs are said to have faster response times than QLED TVs. This means that the diode takes less time to turn on or off. Therefore, the fast response time ensures sharper looking images.
- Viewing angle: Image should be easy to see from almost any corner of the room, as light is emitted directly from the diode, rather than being blocked by the backlight as is the case with QLEDs or LEDs.
- Energy consumption: Since no backlight has to be permanently turned on, energy consumption for OLED TVs is lower than for QLED screens.
TV OLED: LG OLED55CX9LA
LG has a variety of OLED TVs that differ in terms of features and price. The OLED55CX9LA model is equipped with a powerful 9th Gen3 processor, which optimizes picture, sound and brightness automatically. In addition, the device has Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos as well as HDR technology, so contrast and color can be adjusted dynamically. The 4K resolution should allow for sharp images and the TV is equipped with Google Assistant and Alexa. Interesting for gamers: OLED televisions from LG have a response time of one millisecond. Inside the TV is AMD Freesync and Nvidia’s G-Snyc. Both technologies reduce distorted images while gaming.
